S-520
Loudspeaker
£330
The
s520 in its stunning piano gloss finish is just the speaker
for that smaller room. This speaker offers sonic
performance with style and a bass slam that is totally
disproportionate for its size. Made with the same skill and
attention to detail in design you expect from its more
expensive siblings, the sonic's character punches way above
its price point and demands attention. Due to its front
porting this speaker can be crammed into a corner in small
"student like" rooms it also works well in much larger
rooms, say 12x15ft. Add a subwoofer and go even larger
without loss of composure. This is a truly versatile
speaker that must be heard to be appreciated.
With the release of reviews by Andrew Harrison, HiFiNews
October 2006 and Adrian Smith HiFiWorld November 2006, in
his first ever review for Hi Fi World, we know these are
set to last as a true classic.
The s520 has just won the first new sub £500 bookshelf
super test in HiFi World magazine (current issue Feb 2007),
being chosen over much more traditional opposition as the
speaker of choice.
With the increase in colour choice available off the shelf,
make the s520 the object of choice in a new room layout or
design the quality of build matches those costing many
times the price and rivals the very best, so buy and try
with real confidence.

"The Usher is among the most holographic speakers you could
hope to hear, producing images that float free from its
surfaces. On a first-rate disc like the
Richter/Munch/Boston reading of Beethoven's Piano Concerto
No. 1 JVC XRCD], it precisely delineates the onstage
positions of the orchestra sections as well as interactions
between the orchestra and the venue's acoustics. On
smaller-scale recordings, the Dancer also presents spatial
and textural cues that suggest the sizes and shapes of
instruments. scale. What's more, the powerful dynamics
carry right on down into the bass region, which extends to
the upper-20Hz range. As a visiting colleague put it, "It's
hard to believe the bass Usher gets from a single 8"
woofer. If you told me it was using dual 10" woofers, I'd
believe you." Granted, when you push the Dancer very hard,
you might hear faint strain-a subtle "shouting"
quality-from the 7" mid/woofer. But on the whole, the
Usher's dynamic qualities are exemplary."
Chris Martens The Absolute Sound June/July 2005
"Built like a bank vault, the CP-8571 II is a large
floorstander with a curved-wall enclosure and gorgeous
satin walnut finish. According to Tsai, the enclosure is
“built on a cast-iron base for maximum stability” and has
heavily braced 1"-thick cabinet walls with “a layer of
high-mass damping material applied to most internal
surfaces.” The front baffle is made from a rigid MDF
laminate several inches thick, and the enclosure has three
chambers: at the bottom, a mass-loading chamber with
front-facing access hatch; in the middle, a large,
partially lead-lined ported woofer chamber; and at the top,
a separately ported tweeter-mid/woofer enclosure. The
Dancer is bolted to a plinth. Large brass floor spikes
couple the speaker to the floor."

Be718
2 way Loudspeaker
£1600
Designed
by Joseph D'Appolito in collaboration with other US, UK and
Taiwanese companies the Be718 is now finally in production.
Born out of the desire of distributors worldwide to get the
superb BeO Usher Tweeter into a cheaper stand mount
loudspeaker, the Be718 has been worth the wait.
The Be718 with its new Mid woofer drive unit has not let
the side down, Offering exceptional clarity and dynamic
range for its price this beautifully crafted stand mounted
speaker features a distinctive front panel slant that in an
unparalleled configuration improve the time/phase alignment
and further reduce cabinet resonance. These diminutive
speakers offer stunning levels of sonic performance for
your money.
Using Ushers latest high performance high definition
Beryllium Tweeter and the new woofer that feature a heavily
damped and carbon fibre impregnated paper cone. A design
that has proven to be free of resonance's normally
associated with stiff paper cones. This speaker sets new
standards for the quality Usher Audio offer, as per usual
the build quality is second to none.

With reviews now appearing around the world online and in
the old traditional paper press you can start to read what
we have known about for a long time, this really is a
little eastern gem that will keep you enjoying your music
whatever you listen to.
"When I consider the overall sound from any small speaker
I’ve auditioned, the Be-718 is the best that I’ve heard.
It’s exceedingly well balanced, surprisingly neutral, and
extremely transparent. It also has the best bass extension
I've heard short of a big floorstanding speaker. The only
caveats are that you’ll need a sufficiently powerful
amplifier and that you’ll have to give the Be-718 room to
breathe, given its generous bass. To me, those limitations
are not too hard to accept".
Doug Schneider - Soundstage
"The Usher Be-718 is a remarkable loudspeaker and a great
achievement for its size and price. What makes the Be-718s
special is its extremely low levels of tonal, dynamic,
textural, and spatial colorations. This reduction in
distortions allows the Be-718 to get out of the music’s way
to a degree that is unprecedented in a loudspeaker of this
price, in my experience. But the icing on the cake is the
Be-718’s unlikely combination of treble resolution with
smoothness, a characteristic that fosters an immediate and
deep involvement with the music. The Be-718 makes it easy
to forget you’re listening to a reproduction rather than to
music itself".
Robert Harley Absolute Sounds
"The Be-718 is one of those stand-mounts that's more likely
to have you look around for the hidden subwoofer than
wishing you had one. They showed amazing clarity, body and
bass-resolving ability on the drum and its overtones on
"Lovin Mother Fo Ya" from John Cougar's Uh-huh [RVL 7504].
Even the bass lines on "Serious Business", which are hardly
prominent in the mix, remained superbly intelligible in the
background".

Compass 6381 Loudspeaker £2,400
The top of range from the Usher Audio 6 Series is the 6381, this speaker features a single 1" tweeter, a 7" inch mid bass and an 8" deep bass drive units. Carefully matched with a superb crossover lovingly designed by J. D'Appolito. These speakers will astound you with their transparency, and yet again prove that Usher Audio know how to do things right.
In the latest edition of the 6 Moons online magazine the first English review by John Potis over in America, gives a hint at the power and the manufacturing skills that have gone into to producing this loudspeaker. We are delighted to offer this to you, so anybody with a modest budget and a sensibly sized listening room, go out and audition one of these after you have heard all the rest.

"They do also offer a fine sense of immediacy, with
vigorous dynamics and good communication skills. Voices
sound open, speech has fine expression and intelligibility,
and even applause accompanying radio broadcasts sounded
very convincing. Stereo images are precisely defined and
focused, free from boxiness and develop good depth
perspectives."

6371
Loudspeaker
£2,000
The 6371 2.5 way three drive floorstanding loudspeakers
combines all the attributes you expect of HIAudio and Usher
Audio. Superb finish, impeccable sound, affordable pricing.
In the words of a Hi Fi Journalist and design engineer.
These loudspeakers are definitely not as visually
unobtrusive as some of the mini monitors can be. Their
visual impact is extremely striking. At over 1 metre tall
this loudspeaker system requires a large room to extract
the very best from it. Finished in piano black, or white,
with timber side cheeks, in an effort to reduce sidewall
resonance and the baffle slopes backward to aid the
dispersion pattern from the loudspeaker.
Included with the loudspeaker is a space frame support
system, which is spiked to the floor and fixed to the
cabinet by four bolts. At the bottom of the cabinet there
lies a chamber that should be filled with dry sand, this
lowers the centre of gravity, making the transducer even
more stable. The mass of the cabinet is commendably high at
almost 48 Kilogram's. Drive unit line up consists of; two
seven inch bass/midrange units and a one-inch silk domed
treble unit. All of the drive units are designed and
manufactured in-house by Usher.
The input terminals are extremely well designed and will
accept bare wires and 4mm terminations. The receptacle
plate is wide enough for even the largest of cable looms
even if BI-wiring is desired although the terminal jumpers
should be removed before attempting this
These loudspeakers describe en enormous stereo image with
swathes of image depth, gigantic height along with
tremendous width. Frequency response from this reflex
ported cabinet is 32 Hertz-28kHertz (-3dB) with strong bass
delivery along with a very smooth upper midrange to treble
transition. Efficiency of the CP-6371 is quoted as 90 dB
for one watt of input power so this transducer will match
even the smallest of valve amplifiers. Although care must
be taken when connecting to the amplifier as the overall
impedance is set at 4 ohms. Nominal power requirements are
110 watts RMS. Designed by Dr D'Appolito these loudspeakers
are a testament to his design skills!
The character of this loudspeaker is minimal! Although it
reproduces vinyl with almost leach like accuracy there is
just a touch of upper bass warmth. This is undoubtedly due
to the reflex loading technique. Careful positioning can be
used to obviate this. The sound delivered from this
impressive loudspeaker is rich, but not at the expense of
the delicacy from the upper mid to treble balance. With a
powerful bass representation and a stereo image we can
almost walk around in, the emotion of the musicians is
represented with an accuracy I have rarely heard. After the
loudspeaker has been installed this is truly a formidable
transducer.

Dr. Joe D'Appolito describes some aspects of the design
philosophy for these floorstanding loudspeakers:
"The design goals for the CP6371 were flat on-axis response
and broad uniform horizontal polar response. The first goal
yields accurate first arrival information critical to
imaging. The second goal assures a balanced reverberant
field and broadens the sweet spot. This is required because
we judge overall frequency balance psycho-acoustically by
fusing (i.e., integrating) direct and reflected arrivals
over a period of 5-30 milliseconds (the Haas fusion zone).
To this end, the CP6371 is a two and one-half way (2.5-way)
system. The lower woofer crosses out at 350Hz to prevent
combing response errors in the vertical plane. It doubles
the low-bass output and compensates for the spreading
loss."
"The overall woofer pair/tweeter crossover is an acoustic
4th-order in-phase linkwitz alignment at 2450Hz. The
crossover uses heavy gauge air core coils and quality film
capacitors mounted on glass fiber reinforced printed
circuit boards."
"All the drivers used in the CP6371 (and all the Series 6
speakers) have been designed by Mr. Tsai and are
manufactured in-house by Usher. Here are some details on
the drivers: Two 8945A woofers are used in the CP6371. The
8945A woofer is a very sophisticated low-distortion woofer.
It comprises a cast aluminium frame and a carbon fiber
filled paper cone, a T-shaped pole piece with copper
shorting ring and copper sleeve Low-loss linear suspension
with a large flat spider and large half-roll surround. The
sophisticated motor yields very low distortion at high
SPLs. The T9950 is a very low-distortion tweeter with a
28mm coated silk dome, an aluminium voice coil former,
optimised pole piece geometry, large rear chamber for low
resonance and light ferro-fluid damping. Internal wiring is
four 9s OFC and the connectors are by Faston."
Jo D'Appolito
Well that's from the co designer, what have press said?
"Amplifier wise, the 6371s sounded really good with the
Electrocompaniet AW-220s but I had the most enjoyment with
the Soaring Audio SLC-A300 and the Conrad Johnson MF2500A
driving them. I enjoyed the speed and transient response of
the 6371/Soaring Audio combination as well as the fuller,
warmer bass and a larger stage and with the level of
musicality that the speakers had with the 2500A. All in
all, with awesome fit and finish, excellent musical
performance, and a real-world price, you get an extremely
good value for your money. It's not hard at all to give
these speakers a very high recommendation.

Most Wanted Loudspeaker 2005
Bass is superbly controlled on these models by the addition of sand or lead shot to the rear compartment so designed. HIAudio strongly recommend this is filled. the bass response from these speakers is designed to be at its best with this tray filled. Lead or sand have a similar profound effect. once you've listened to them with the cavity filled, you won't want to listen with it empty. The bass registers tighten and go even deeper, whilst the midband steps forward just a little providing an even sound stage with vocalists in musicians sighted correctly in the place. You have been warned!

6311
Loudspeaker
£1,500
The 6 Series starts off with the dual driver 6311
floorstanding loudspeaker. This speaker has been widely
seen around the world at various Hi Fi Shows. Winning best
sound on several occasions. It shares many design decisions
from the larger 6371 and 6381 speakers, but has only 2
drive units.
The sloping front of the speakers has been so manufactured
to enhance sound dispersion and time phase coherency,
whilst the distinctive top mounted tweeter is to avoid
diffraction for more natural imaging. Using the same drive
units as the more expensive 6371 the 6311 is suitable for
slightly smaller rooms. Offering nearly the same frequency
response in a slightly smaller package.
Bass is superbly controlled on these models by the addition
of sand or lead shot to the rear compartment so designed.
HIAudio strongly recomend this is filled. the bass response

"Put all of these characteristics together, and you have a
smooth, responsive, richly detailed loudspeaker that is
remarkably easy to listen to for hours (I can't begin to
tell you how many times I set out to listen to a single
reference track and wound up listening to an entire
album—always a good sign). While this speaker does not
sound "spectacular" in the self-aggrandizing way that some
high-end models do, it conveys much of the warmth, mystery,
and drama of live music— which is all we could hope any
good speaker might do. If only for self education, then, I
urge you to go hear the Ushers before you buy anything else
in their price range. But, once your hear them, you may
need to take them home with you."

"I enjoyed the time I spent listening to a wide range of
program material through the Compass X- 719 s. Curiously,
they performed best with delicate, simple acoustic music,
such as solo piano recordings, and bombastic, electronic
rock recordings. In addition, while its low -frequency
character is more buxom than strictly accurate, the X-
719's bass extension and high-level dynamic capability have
set new benchmarks for a bookshelf speaker."
