Naim have been a commercial success for a long time, their
build quality and attention to detail is simply quite
extraordinary. They still support/service/repair everything
they have ever made and loyalty amongst existing owners is
just remarkable. Part of the appeal is the simple but
aesthetically pleasing style and stunning built quality,
but a large part is the ownership experience coupled with a
unique and compelling sound: dynamic, controlled, excellent
seperation and very involving.
Those of you who know me are aware that my approach is open
and that I believe in a sense of system compatibility and
balance. I am happy to mix and match brands to obtain the
required results. Serious audio buyers quite often have
this approach, so the fact that Naim users on the whole
tend to have one make systems smacks of being suckered into
one purchase after another, however it just isn't that
simple!!
Having established that power supplies lay at the heart of
Naim's unique character they developed the concept of the
upgrade path. A basic Naim preamplifier can be powered by
its partnering Naim power amp, substantial gains can then
be made by adding a separate power supply just for the
pre-amp, various performance levels of pre-amp and power
amp, and power supply, most of which are cross compatible:
these upgrades aren't just an excuse to get the audiophile
to spend more-they really do work!! Naim understand system
synergy, by controlling all of the elements, right down to
cables[made by hand], are able to supply synergistic
combinations straight out of the box. This doesn't mean
that their equipment is unable to be partnered with other
brands, their CD players work extremely well when partnered
with valve amps as do their pre-amps.
At all levels I have been seriously impressed, although
some products are obviously superior to others. All of the
CD players represent excellent value at their respective
price and some of the amplifiers are very impressive, all
of the speakers are made without compromise and sound
extremely good [real wood veneers].
POWER
AMPS
NAP
500
£14,395
Power
output continuous [8 Ohm] 140 Watts
Our design brief for the NAP 500 required an amplifier that
could drive any load down to 2 Ohms for prolonged periods,
deliver over 100W into 8 Ohms and sound - at the very least
- as good as our reference at the time, the NAP135.
To avoid the compromises implied by the use of multiple
sets of output devices, either in totem-pole or parallel
configurations, the search was on for a very special output
transistor. A bipolar transistor with a specification
combination of very high current, power rating and
bandwidth was needed, far in excess of anything available
to Naim before. A suitable output device was eventually
developed after six years' collaboration with a
semiconductor manufacturer.
From an early stage of conception it was decided to use
bridged amplifiers for each channel of the NAP 500. This
allowed the design to have maximised open and closed loop
speed, less intrusive protection circuitry and reduced
interaction between input and output signals as the very
high drive currents to the loudspeaker do not flow through
the system earth.
Naim has always understood the importance of reducing
supply-induced intermodulation distortions and mains
harmonic electrical noise from an amplifier, and has always
used regulated supplies in its premier amplifiers. It was
considered likely that improvements in these areas would
yield further large gains in performance. Each channel of
the NAP 500 includes ten stages of local regulation. To
reduce interference from the mains supply further, the
transformer and first stages of the power supply are in a
separate enclosure (the same size as a Supercap), which
provides twelve raw d.c. supplies for the power amplifier.
Hence, the NAP 500 system consists of two boxes, a stereo
amplifier and a separate power supply.
All new circuit topology has been developed to maximise
bandwidth and reduce distortions and power supply
dependency. Also, special attention has been paid to
reducing thermally-induced noise, an especially important
consideration in power amplifiers. A variable speed
intelligent fan system provides discreet extra cooling if
needed.
The performance of the finished amplifier exceeds the
design brief in all areas. Power output per channel is over
140W into 8 ohms and compared with the NAP 135, which in
itself already provided exemplary measurements, the NAP 500
has five times the internal bandwidth, a quarter of the
distortion and a one hundred times reduced operating noise
floor.
Needless to say, every aspect of the NAP 500's sound
quality is truly exceptional.

NAP
300
£5,750
Power
output continuous [8 Ohm] 90 Watts
After seventeen successful years at the top of Naim's
amplifier range, the NAP 135 has been eclipsed by the
flagship NAP 500. Many years of research went into the NAP
500, as fundamentally new components and technologies had
to be perfected before Naim could raise the performance
level. Many of these technical developments, along with the
elegant new styling have been applied to the mighty NAP
300.
Like the flagship Naim NAP 500, the NAP 300 is a stereo
two-chassis amplifier, one box containing the audio
amplifier and the second housing the individually regulated
power supply. Improved earthing arrangements have resulted
in an entirely new circuit topology built on a very high
quality, anti-resonance main audio circuit board. The NAP
300 uses the same 007 transistors that were custom-designed
for the NAP 500. These outstanding components each provide
up to 80 Amps and 350 Watts, negating the need to use
parallel pairs of transistors (which always have a negative
effect on sound). Additional 007 transistors are used in
the fully regulated power supply, ensuring the very best
performance.
Anti-vibration, resonance-controlling feet serve to protect
the sensitive internal components from resonance and
microphonic vibration.
A variable speed, virtually noiseless cooling fan is
mounted on a large internal heat sink providing long-term
stability and the ability to swing a massive 750 VA on
transients. The NAP 300 is stable into any load and able to
drive a 2-Ohm load for long periods of time
The Naim NAP 300 delivers awesome power without sacrificing
any speed or agility to provide awe-inspiring levels of
detail, ambient information and musicality.

NAP
200 power amplifier
£1,550
Power
output continuous [8 Ohm] 70 Watts
During the years of research that went into the NAP 500
amplifier, many technical developments were made that could
be successfully applied to the existing products. Many of
these developments, along with the elegant new styling have
been incorporated, resulting in the 'Classic' line-up.
Like the flagship NAP 500, the NAP 200 uses a new circuit
design with improved earthing arrangements built on a very
high quality, anti-resonance main audio circuit board.
Anti-vibration, resonance-controlling feet serve to protect
the sensitive internal components from resonance and
microphonic vibration.
A new, top-quality 430VA toroidal transformer provides more
than 300VA of transient power. Separate windings provide
dedicated left and right channel rectified supplies with
two smoothing capacitors per channel. The NAP 200 also has
a separate winding providing a pre-amplifier power supply.
This enables the NAP 200 to be used in a two-box amplifier
configuration with a Naim pre-amplifier such as the NAC
202.
The naim NAP 200 is stable into any load and able to drive
a 2-ohm load for long periods of time.

PRE
AMPLIFIERS
NAC
552 pre-amplifier
£14,645
The NAC 552 is by some distance the most advanced Naim
pre-amplifier ever and has some claim, therefore, to being
the best pre-amplifier, period.
The introduction of the NAP 500 in 2001 brought with it a
new level of technical and musical performance. A Naim
design project group began reviewing the existing
pre-amplifier designs exploring possibilities for major
design improvement over the existing reference
pre-amplifier, the Naim NAC 52.
Many designs were explored and a complete evaluation of the
current component and raw material situation took place.
The circuit topology was totally reviewed and components
upgraded in accordance with the advancements made over the
last decade. Extensive listening to various designs and
topologies ensured that the harmony between music and
technology was maintained.

Power supply design has always been at the heart of Naim
research and this project was no exception. For the NAC 552
a radical new split rail power supply configuration has
been employed that almost eliminates power supply noise in
the signal earth. Housed in a separate, full-width brushed
aluminium case; the power supply features a massive 800 VA
toroidal transformer, three enormous smoothing capacitors
and fourteen hand selected power regulators to
independently supply the different stages of the
pre-amplifier.
As pioneered in the Naim CDS compact disc player fully
suspended sub-chassis mounted circuit boards are used in
the Naim NAC 552. This method of suspension maximises
isolation, hence minimizing the effect of vibration on the
highly sensitive electronic components. Carefully matched
precision rotary potentiometers with precious metal wipers
are used to ensure long-term stability and preserve music
integrity.
The six inputs on the NAC 552 can be selected directly from
either the front panel or the FLASH system remote. In
addition to the usual din plug inputs, preferred for their
superior earthing and impedance matching, the NAC 552 owner
can configure two of the inputs for use with the more
common RCA phono type connectors, enabling the use of
alternative components with pre-owned interconnects. Each
of the six inputs has separate listen and record
facilities. A dedicated unity gain input is provided for
use with the Naim AV2 processor or similar.
A 552 product plan to enable future requirements for
multi-channel use has also been incorporated within this
project.
The Naim NAC 552 redefines the state of the art ensuring
the utmost musical enjoyment for many years to come.
NAC
252
£4,750
The
NAC 252 descends from the NAC 52 - still one of the finest
pre-amplfiers ever manufactured. It brings both control and
connectivity advances over the NAC 52, and a significantly
enhanced construction, aesthetic and finish. Its
performance, too, is enhanced with the benefit of a decade
of R&D bringing yet more speed, detail, transparency
and music.
Many designs were explored and a complete review of the
circuit topology and components took place in accordance
with the developments pioneered in the NAC 552. Hundreds of
hours were spent listening to various designs, ensuring
that the harmony between music and technology was always
maintained.
Improved earthing arrangements have resulted in an entirely
new circuit topology, built upon a single very high
quality, anti-resonance main audio circuit board.
Anti-vibration, resonance-controlling feet compliment the
ingeniously slotted and suspended main circuit board to
protect the sensitive internal components from resonance
and microphonic vibration.
Carefully matched precision rotary potentiometers with
precious metal wipers are used to ensure long-term
stability and preserve music integrity.

Ten independently regulated power supplies are fed from the
matching Super-Cap power supply. Totally separate regulated
supplies for the digital control and switching ensure no
noise is generated in the audio circuits.

during listening and controls all aspects of the amplifier
including optical protection circuits that continuously
monitor the power supplies ensuring safe shut down in the
event of a power cut, and the user configurable 'Smart IR'
system remote control.
In addition to the preferred DIN plug inputs the NAC 252
owner can configure two of the inputs for use with the more
common RCA phono connectors, allowing a wide range of
non-Naim cables and components to be used. A
user-configurable unity-gain input is provided for use with
the AV2 processor or similar.
Each of the six inputs feature separate listen and record
facilities. In addition to the usual record mute, the NAC
252 mutes not only the output but also powers down all
associated record circuitry, eliminating any possibility of
degrading the main output.
- Six line-level inputs including two user-configurable versatile (DIN / phono) inputs.
- User configurable unity-gain AV input.
- Powered input for use with Stageline or Prefix phono stage.
- Full infrared remote control.
- RC5 input for wired remote control in complex installations.

The included NAPSC power supply independently powers the digital and control circuits while the audio circuits are fed either from a NAP 150 or NAP 200 power amplifier or from a stand-alone power supply such as the Hi-Cap or Super-Cap.

Low resonance circuit boards and anti-vibration, resonance
control feet maximise isolation, hence minimizing the
effect of microphonic vibration on the highly sensitive
electronic components.
Carefully matched, precision rotary potentiometers with
precious metal wipers are used to ensure long-term
stability and preserve music integrity.
The NAC 282 features a silent microprocessor that sleeps
during listening and controls all aspects of the amplifier.

of non-Naim cables and components to be used. A dedicated
unity-gain input is provided for use with the Naim AV2
processor or similar.
Each of the six inputs feature separate listen and record
facilities. In addition to the usual record mute, the NAC
282 mutes not only the output but powers down all
associated circuitry, eliminating any possibility of
degrading the main output.
The NAC 282 combines truly awesome sound quality, with user
selectable features and flexibility that ensure it will
function as the heart of a high quality hi-fi system for
many years.

and musical performance. Many of the developments, along
with the elegant new styling have been applied to the NAC
202.
NAC 122x pre-amplifier
£775
The NAC122x, a replacement for the NAC112x, is based on its
larger brother the NAC202 and features a hardwired
motorised Alps volume control potentiometer delivering
better performance, lower noise in use and an improved feel
over the resister ladder volume control of the NAC112x.
The six DIN inputs are relay switched, contrasting with
being multiplexed on the NAC112x, improving performance.
Inputs one and six: (CD and Aux2) are duplicated on RCA
sockets.

Much care in the design has been afforded to making the
casework and PCB as low resonance as possible and to
isolate the PCB from the environment and hence deleterious
vibrations.
The NAP122x features an additional output in addition to
the Naim standard DIN. This stereo output on two RCA
sockets, is optimised for connection to an active
subwoofer, supports the growing use of 2.1 systems.
Rear panel layout is similar to the NAC202 and hence is
Fraim friendly.
The NAC122x can be powered from the preamp power outputs of
the NAP150x or NAP200 or can be upgraded by powering it
from either a FlatCap 2x or Hi-Cap 2 power supply. One of
the DIN inputs can supply power to a Naim Stageline
outboard phono stage.
SuperLine
Reference phono amplifier
Vinyl
replay makes a huge contribution to the enjoyment of
recorded music. At its best, vinyl has a uniquely engaging
and musical quality, and with the launch of the SuperLine
phono amplifier, the best of vinyl has just got better.
The
SuperLine is a very high performance moving-coil phono
amplifier built in the Naim signature extruded and brushed
aluminium reference enclosure. It brings all Naim’s latest
analogue electronic design and environmental isolation
techniques to bear on the most delicate analogue element of
any hi-fi system – the moving-coil phono signal.
The
heart of the SuperLine is a new, two stage single-ended
Class A discrete amplifier with part-passive RIAA filtering
that runs off 25 internally regulated power supplies and
features the transistor “quiet room” thermal isolation
technique originally developed for the NAP 500 power
amplifier. Environmental isolation is also ensured by the
SuperLine’s massive sub-chassis and high-Q spring
suspension system – the first time on a phono amplifier.
The
SuperLine requires an external power supply – either from
the power supply output of a Naim preamplifier or the
SUPERNAIT integrated amplifier, or, for optimum
performance, a dedicated FlatCap, HiCap or SuperCap.
Duplicate phono and BNC sockets provide input versatility,
and cartridge impedance matching adjustment is provided by
four resistive and three capacitive load plugs. In
combination with the SuperLine’s internal input load,
twenty different standard load combinations are possible.
SuperLine
brings out all that’s best in vinyl replay - timing, pitch
accuracy, clarity, detail, and the unmistakable warmth that
records can deliver in abundance.

POWER
SUPPLIES
Super-Cap
power supply
£3,200
The importance of power supplies has been close to the
heart of Naim philosophy for over twenty years.
Although certain Naim amplifiers provide a very adequate
power supply to the partnering pre-amplifier, the use of a
separate Naim ultra-low noise power supply brings
substantially improved musicality to the whole system.
Simply being separate from the amplifiers ensures correct
earthing and hum-free operation, while the large toroidal
transformer and generous high quality smoothing capacitors
provide exceptional dynamic stability.
Each of the multiple power outputs use specially selected
regulators for optimum performance. The Super-Cap can be
used to power all of the Naim pre-amplifiers (except the
NAC 552), phono stages and active crossovers and is the
only choice for supplying power to the NAC 252
pre-amplifier.

The addition of anti-vibration, resonance-controlling feet
compliment the elegant new cast and extruded anti-magnetic
chassis to protect the sensitive internal components from
resonance and microphonic vibration.
The audible benefits from adding a Super-Cap are
fundamental to the music: improving timing, dynamic range,
clarity and order. Particularly complex music becomes both
easier to understand and listen to. Inclusion of a
Super-Cap offers the additional benefit of allowing the
pre-amplifier to be left switched on constantly,
independently of the power amplifier, keeping the unit's
complex circuitry fully stabilised at all times.
Ultra-low noise pre-amplifier and electronic crossover

The new Naim Super-Cap sets free the musicality and dynamic
range of a hi-fi system, making an incredibly effective
upgrade to a pre-amplifier/power amplifier combination.

all of the Naim phono stages, active crossovers and
pre-amplifiers except the NAC 552 and NAC 252; in the case
of the NAC 282 pre-amplifier a second Hi-Cap may be used,
bringing further improvements.
The addition of anti-vibration, resonance-controlling feet
compliment the elegant new cast and extruded anti-magnetic
chassis to protect the sensitive internal components from
resonance and microphonic vibration.
The audible benefits from adding a Hi-Cap are fundamental
to the music: improving timing, dynamic range, clarity and

Huge toroidal transformer and smoothing capacitors provide
exceptional dynamic stability.
The new Naim Hi-Cap sets free the musicality and dynamic
range of a hi-fi system, making an incredibly effective
upgrade to a pre-amplifier, power amplifier combination.
Flat-Cap
2x power supply
£585
The Flatcap 2x is an external power supply that replaces
the Flatcap2. The improvements to sound quality are subtle
but significant: dynamics are more even across the audio
band, bass lines are more easily differentiated and the
system noise floor is reduced. The performance improvements
are even more obvious when powering a pre-amplifier and CD
player at the same time.
The Flatcap 2x can provide exceptionally low noise, dual
power supplies for two separate Series 5 components; a NAC
112x and a CD5, or NAC 112x and Stageline, for example.

The Flatcap 2x transformer has two separate secondary
windings to isolate each of the dual supplies from the
other. It includes four Naim-tested and selected low-noise
regulators to achieve its exceptional performance.
Physical changes are: a Fraim-friendly stiffer thicker
chassis; a new redesigned transformer with a higher VA
rating, lower impedance and higher peak current capability.
Heatsinks are also significantly larger.
It can be used with the NAC 202 and NAC 282 pre-amplifiers,
and our SNAXO electronic crossovers to provide an
effective, low-cost entry into active system operation. It
can be used to power all of the Naim phono stages, active
crossovers and pre-amplifiers except the NAC 552 and NAC
252.
XPS-2
power supply
£2,750
The
importance of power supplies has been close to the heart of
Naim philosophy for over twenty years.
Naim
research proved that divorcing the main power supply from a
CD player is wholly beneficial, whereas the more common
arrangement of housing the converter circuitry in a
separate box causes many problems.
The
Naim XPS power supply is a very sophisticated power supply
with six separately regulated, very low noise outputs,
featuring a toroidal transformer and six power regulators.
These supplies are branched and re-regulated, some twice in
the CD player.
The
addition of anti-vibration, resonance-controlling feet
compliment the elegant new cast and extruded anti-magnetic
chassis protect the sensitive internal components from
resonance and microphonic vibration.
This
supply is required and comes as standard with the CDS3 but
can also be added to the CDX2 CD player, providing a
substantial improvement in sound quality and a possible
upgrade path from one player to another

Timing, dynamic range and clarity all significantly improve
by adding a Naim XPS to a CDX2. Complex passages become
more understandable, bringing far more involvement and
enjoyment from the music.
• Ultra-low noise CD player power supply.
• Huge toroidal transformer and smoothing capacitors
provide exceptional dynamic stability.
• Six power regulators feeding six completely separately
regulated power outputs.
The new Naim XPS sets the music free, making it an
incredibly effective upgrade to the Naim CDX2, and a
critical component of the Naim CDS3
NA
PSC power supply
£265

The NAPSC comes as standard with the NAC 282 pre-amplifier
and can be bought as an upgrade for the NAC 202. It then
supplies all the digital circuitry used for the
pre-amplifier switching.
The NAPSC can also be used to power the Headline headphone
amplifier.
