Stereo tube line preamplifier with two double triode in class A configuration;
5 inputs, 2 main outputs, passive volume out, tape out, h.t.d.. output module
Sold with remote control. The Lector ZOE preamp is a superb linestage that features an innovative power supply based on a parallel/shunt voltage regulator circuit. No active devices are in series with the power supply path, just passive components such as premium quality resistors that provide the voltage drop needed, while an active device - wired in parallel - sinks current in order to keep a stable output voltage.
This new concept offers a virtual zero-ohm energy output to the tubes without relying on huge amount of negative feedback – in fact it’s a zero feedback design. The result is remarkable performance without the typical effect on overall sound quality imposed by series or pass regulators that are often plagued with a high impedance output and/or strong negative feedback.
Despite its simple, basic operation and clear advantage over series regulators, parallel/shunt voltage regulators are very uncommon in audio applications at any price level. Simplicity sometime is challenging and not that easy to achieve. A shunt regulator runs hot: it requires bigger transformers and huge heat sinks as if it were a small class-A amplifier – and in fact it is! So this additional heat has to be dealt with and the ZOE is fitted with a substantial heat sink to dissipate this excess heat.
The preamplifier gain stage is an all-tube, class-A design equipped with a pair of stock 6922 tubes. Thanks to Lector’s SATC (Self Adjusting Tube Circuitry, which is activated by an internal toggle switch), the new ZOE can also make use of a wide range of twin triodes – such as 12AT7/12AU7/6CG7/12BH7 – to suite end users’ taste. And swapping different tubes has never been easier. A large Plexiglas window on the top can be removed by simply undoing four screws, which allows you to change the tubes without removing the whole chassis lid. Another small window on front panel lets you see the internal circuitry, which is cleverly and discretely backlit during operation.
The ZOE comes with a remote-control handset and has five line inputs, mute/operation switch, auto-delay, remote controlled volume, two sets of main outputs, tape outputs and home theatre direct outputs that bypass the whole preamplifier circuitry when the unit is switched off. This feature is particularly useful in complex home theatre installations and allows you to send the selected source signals to an external multi-channel processor.
In the end, the ZOE’s shunt regulator effectively cancels any trace of power supply-added sound. What you hear is just the sound of your favourite tubes operating with exceptional linearity in a class-A gain stage. The purity of the ZOE is well augmented by its great dynamics, its big and dimensional soundstage, its accurate imaging, and its ability to resolve the subtle details.

PHONO
AMP SYSTEM
This phono stage is a pure tube unit that offers both MM
and MC inputs. It operates only in pure class-A without any
local or total feedback circuitry, and provides the exact
right amplification and equalization to the RIAA standard
for both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. The
circuitry uses five ECC-88/6922 tubes for moving coil
operation and two ECC-81/12AT7 for moving magnet (as
passive RIAA equalization), and one ECC-81/12AT7 for output
as a cathode follower adaptor. All tubes are carefully
selected for exceptionally low-noise operation. All
connectors are high-quality RCA fittings.
An
innovative bit of Lector-designed circuitry automatically
adjusts the control of the tubes’ bias by optical devices,
and another bit of special circuitry controls the cathode
operation for very low noise in the moving coil input. You
can change the input loading of MC cartridges by use of
external RCA plugs fitted with specific resistors for a
better interface between cartridge and input tube. 47 Kohms
is the default loading, and Lector supplies four other
pairs of plug-resistor sets: 30 ohms (Blue plug), 100 ohms
(Black plug), 470 ohms (Green plug), and 1000 ohms (Yellow
plug). Its exceptional signal to noise ratio, together with
its hi-gain operation, allows the Lector Phono Amp System
to overcome the limitations of transformer step-up
(possible distortion and frequency response limits, as well
as the inability to properly load MC cartridges) and
deliver pure tube-amplified music.
